SASSU Europe
carried off by Jupiter in the form of a bull is at the centre of the
ceramic mural, the image of a developing reality, dominated by the group
of horses drawing the sun chariot driven by Apollo, god of light and
beauty riding towards the future. In
the lower band, the sea divides the Rape of Europe into two parts; one
depicting intelligence and strength, with the centaur Cheiron fighting
with the stag, image of brute force, so well described in the poem by d'
Annunzio; the other depicting the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, twin
brothers, image of European brotherhood, symbol of a reality, a society in
development. Men and shepherds and girls are amazed at the vision of the
gods and of Europe on the bull. On
the right, Ariadne sleeps abandoned, waiting for Bacchus, image of life,
who enjoys the fruits of the earth, work, love, with Venus genetrix. The
Argonauts with Hercules close the mural to the right; men, Europeans
looking for the golden fleece are the symbol of adventure and of the total
commitment of present-day European society. I
completed the 150 m2 mural, painted on exactly 583 50x50 cm
ceramic tiles, at the Sassolgrande ceramics factory owned by the Rondine
group in Scandiano, Italy. It is the result of my forty years of
experience in this area. The
tiles were fired once, then painted with ceramic enamels, fired again at a
temperature of 1200° in a tunnel kiln, and finally assembled one by one
using a special technique on an aluminium trollis. Aligi
